Nancy Yantchook Obituary

Nancy Carol Anderson Yantchook passed away on May 6, 2022, at the Smoky Ridge Health and Rehab Facility, Burnsville, NC. Nancy was born on February 22, 1940, in Scales Mound, IL and lived with her parents Carl Anderson and Doris Redfearn Anderson in Galena, IL where she attended grade school and high school. After high school, she attended Finley Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque, IA and graduated with her RN in June of 1961. She later attended California State University of LA where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in nursing and public health. She worked as a nurse in IA, AK, CA, Landstuhl Army Hospital in West Germany, DC, VA and NC in various specialties, as a hospital nurse, school nurse, and occupational health nurse. She has now embarked on her new career as a nurse in heaven.

When she was working as a public health service nurse in Kotzebue, AK, she met her husband, Paul Yantchook, who was working as an electronic technician at the nearby Air Force Long Range Radar Station. Paul later went to Germany to work on a NATO Air Defense System where she later joined him in Germany and they were married in Basel, Switzerland, in 1967. They have one son, Niles Yantchook, born on March 3, 1975.

Surviving is her husband of 55 years, Paul Yantchook; son, Niles Yantchook; and a brother, Gary Anderson who is living in California with his wife Charlotte. She has one aunt still living and many, many cousins, most of whom live in IL, WI, and CO.

She and Paul both retired in 1996 and moved to their mountain top hideaway where they enjoyed their mountain views and two German Shepherds. Nancy was involved in many volunteer organizations in Mitchell County. Such as the Chairperson of Mitchell Community Health Partnership for 13 plus years, Childfest of Mitchell/Yancey Counties, Emergency Preparedness of Mitchell County, with many church organizations including Food Distributions, the Respite Groups of First Baptist, INASMUCH of Spruce Pine Methodist, and MCAR (Mitchell County Animal Rescue).

She enjoyed gardening, reading, genealogy (did 5 family trees for the McCanns, Andersons, Redfearns, Smarts, and Yantchooks), and traveling with her husband in most of the US, Europe, Russia, parts of Africa and many cruises.

She will be interned in the Shrine of Remembrance Chapel in Michigan Memorial Park, Flatrock, MI. Anyone who knew Nancy will miss her so very, very, very much.
