Minnie Ella Young, age 98 of Burnsville, passed away at Madison Health and Rehabilitation in Mars Hill on Thursday, October 29th, 2020. She was a daughter of the late Margaret Edge Young and Joseph A. Young.
She was preceded in death by sisters, Kathleen Young Murphy and Juanita Young Morgan; brothers, Woodrow W. Young, Thomas Marshall Young and Eugene Austin Young.
She is survived by her twin brother, Richmond Dale Young.
Minnie was a graduate of Micaville High School and attended Asheville Normal School, where she was the president of the Student Body. Later, she graduated from Western Carolina College with a B.S. in Education. She taught high school business courses in Weaverville and Leaksville before joining her brothers in the family business, Youngs’ Shoes. She managed the Forest City location for many years, where she was an active member in the community including the local Merchants Association and the First Methodist Church and until returning to Yancey County. She spent many years as a dedicated member of Celo United Methodist Church.
The motto of “service” for Asheville Normal School was the guiding force for most graduates, Minnie especially. Service meant that graduates integrated themselves into whatever community hired them to teach, they joined churches, aligned themselves with neighborhood service projects and, in general, attempted to “stimulate the community to higher ideas.” Minnie, along with the support of her loving parents and siblings, took this to heart and excelled in much of her life.
Private family services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family would like memorial donations to be made to a charity of your choosing.
Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home is respectfully serving the Young family.
