On Thursday, March 11th, 2021, Mildred Gibbs Harris, age 93 of Burnsville, completed her journey in this world and entered into her eternal home with her Savior whom she loved and talked to often.
Mildred was born in Celo, North Carolina to the late Edward Gibbs and Lula Carroway Gibbs. She was the second oldest of eight children. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Phil Harris, who was waiting for her to join him; brothers: Edward, Dail and Ray Gibbs, all of Celo; sisters: Marie Johnson of Marion and Nell Huskins of Celo.
Mildred was an incredibly unique person, especially in her own eyes. She was a lady of small stature, but could walk in some large shoes. She was a loving and caring mother, but extremely stern when the situation called for it. She was very generous, yet conversative. She made sure she took care of herself and everything around her.
She is survived by her two children, Phillip “Tony” Harris and wife Corinne, Lora Denise Young and husband John; two sisters, Nina Johnson of Marion and Grace Simmons of Burnsville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Gibbs of Arden.
The love she showed her family was never failing, sometimes it was tough love, but still love just the same.
Mildred was a self-acclaimed worker. For several years, she was a bookkeeper for some businesses in Spruce Pine and then the family business in Burnsville. After that time, she became an active traveler and an almost full-time golfer; having been successful at both. She was also a homemaker and very much enjoyed having fun with friends and family.
As a very devoted Christian, Mildred was an active member of First Baptist Church in Burnsville. In her life, she was a Methodist, Presbyterian and Baptist. The denomination did not matter, because she just loved her Lord.
The family wishes to thank all the friends and family who did something to show their love, the workers and staff of Compassionate Care Western North Carolina, and all the other people who helped to care for Mildred in the last few months of her life.
A graveside service will be held in the Carroway Cemetery in Celo on Sunday, March 14th at 2 p.m. Pastor Tommy James and Reverend Scot Garland will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family would like for memorial donations to be made to Compassionate Care Western North Carolina at 856 Georges Fork Road, Burnsville, NC 28714.
Many stories told about Mildred will be shared in the future, and we will all remember that “Mildred told us so!”
