Joseph Woodrow Mathis

Joseph Woodrow Mathis, age 91 of Burnsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Smoky Ridge Health and Rehabilitation. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Sarah Williams Mathis.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Zellma Jones Mathis; and his son, Joseph James Mathis.

Joseph was a strong man with an even stronger work ethic. He enjoyed doing construction work, farming, and gardening. He was a loving husband, father, and friend, and he will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Nina Faye Boone and husband, Phillip; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.  

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home in Burnsville, NC. The family will receive friends and loved ones one hour prior to the service for visitation. Interment will follow the service in the Bowditch Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery. Reverend Shane Buchanan will be officiating.
