Johnnie Dellinger Thomas

August 1, 1937 ~ December 23, 2021 (age 84)

Johnnie Dellinger Thomas, age 84, of the Newdale Community, went home to be with the Lord  on Thursday, December 23rd, 2021 at the Solace Center in Asheville. Born August 1st, 1937 in Yancey County, he was a son of the late Arnold and Pearl Woody Thomas; and husband of the late Foye Blevins Thomas, who preceded him in death in August 2011.  Johnnie was also preceded in death by sisters, Hattie Mae Thomas Geouge and Bonnie Davis; and brothers: Floyd Thomas, Paul Thomas, Jeter Thomas, Jim Thomas, Dan Thomas, Bill Thomas, Arvil Thomas, Ben Thomas and Sam Thomas.

Johnnie is survived by a sister, Grace Thomas Allen of Burnsville, NC; a brother, Joe Thomas of Franklinton, NC; his daughters, Lisa Thomas Austin and husband, Johnny, of Arden, NC,  Mary Thomas Blevins and husband, Michael, of Burnsville; granddaughters, Emily Austin Yount (Alec) and Jenna Elizabeth Blevins. Numerous special nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Johnnie owned and operated his own grading and excavating business for more than fifty years. In his personal life, he found meaning in his role as a foster parent and as a member and deacon serving with the Morning Star Baptist Church. In later years, he found fellowship at Browns Creek Baptist Church, where he loved everyone and especially enjoyed making people laugh.

Given the resurgence of COVID-19 in Western North Carolina, a private graveside service will be held. Rev. Holt Whitson will officiate the service, with internment to follow at the Morning Star Baptist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to organizations that continue to make a positive impact for people in the Yancey County community: Yancey County Meals on Wheels, Compassionate Care of Burnsville or Gideons International.

Additionally, the family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to those individuals and organizations who shared their love and care with Johnnie over the course of his life and especially in recent months: Cynthia Rhodes, Ken Mainster, Angie, Danny & Dean Weatherman, Dina, Darrick Gockerell, and Dr. Mitchell at Celo Health Clinic for all his special care, among others.
