Hoover Higgins, age 92, of Rutherford, passed away Wednesday, March 2nd, 2022 at Hospice of Carolina Foothills in Forest City, NC. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late Hiram and Lovina Higgins. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by three brothers: Creed Higgins, Elbert Higgins, Erwin Higgins; and one sister, Carrie Higgins Randolph.
He was an Army Veteran who served in the 101st Airborne honorably. He spent his life working mostly outdoors, working with the Forest Service in Yancey County, Newport News Shipyard in Virginia, and farming and tending the land.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 73 years, Joye Wallace Higgins, of the home; son, Gordon Higgins; daughter, Gloria Lynn Higgins; grandchildren: Thomas Higgins, Heather Higgins, Gordon Higgins, Jr., and James Gerhart; great-grandchildren: Alyvianna Shirley, Caiden Shirley, Briana Gerhart, James Gerhart, Jr., and Christian Gerhart. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Services will be held Sunday, March 13th in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Pastor Kevin Jones will officiate. The family will receive friends and loved ones an hour prior to service time. Interment will follow in the Hunter Cemetery on Coxes Creek with military rites conducted by Sgt E.L. Randolph, Chapter #57 DAV.
