Edna "Nanny" Hall Obituary

Edna Hall, age 104, was called home by The Lord on the evening of June 3, 2020. She was finally reunited with her dearly departed husband of 72 years, Terry Hall. Edna was born in Booneford to the late, Ed and Mary Sparks. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her sister, Trula Sparks Dubroka; brothers, Howard, Roy, Coy, and Fred Sparks; her son, Kenny Hall; and her grandchildren, Pamela, David, and Johnna Hall.

She is survived by her son, John Hall and wife Lisa, of Burnsville. Her grandchildren, Terry Hall and wife Susan, of Burnsville; Michael Hall and wife Amy, of Raleigh; Johnny Hall and longtime girlfriend, Ashley, of Burnsville; Amanda Hall and husband, Ian, of Asheville, Her great-grandchildren, Andrew Hall and wife, Sidney of Asheville; Ryan Briggs and wife, Kayla, of Mitchell County; Harrison and Ruby Hall, of Raleigh; and Bodi and Wes Luther, of Asheville. Her great-great-grandchildren, Trinity, Laney and Thea Briggs. She was also survived by many beloved family members and friends, including a very special niece, Barbara Ann Sparks Led ford, of Baltimore, MD.

Edna graduated from Micaville High School in 1934, winning many awards in track and field. After high school, Edna married her husband, Terry and began working at Ellen’s Knitting Mill in Spruce Pine. She also worked sheeting mica for a local mine and at the Yancey County tag office. Once her husband was elected Sheriff of Yancey County in 1950, she and her family moved to the Jail where she began to cook for the inmates. The legend is people tried to get arrested to eat one of her home cooked meals. Edna moved to Elkin in the 1960’s when her husband began working for the state ABC Board. Edna was proud that she had been able to work in public jobs for over 60 years, which was rare for a woman of her generation. Edna eventually retired for The Bell Telephone Company where she had been a telephone operator for many years. Edna was a devoted Christian and a member of the West Elkin Baptist Church. Even when she could not attend church she would listen remotely to the services from her home. Her favorite games included Skip-Bo, Phase 10, and 10,000. She continued to win almost every game up until her death. Edna enjoyed watching sports and her favorite teams were The Atlanta Braves and Duke Blue Devils.

Due to the pandemic the visitation will be limited to immediate family only. A graveside service will be at 4 P.M. on Saturday, June 6, 2020 in the Will Young Cemetery at Booneford. Rev. Dwayne Byrd will officiate.
