Pastor Bill D. Mitchell, age 83, of Marion, NC went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
Bill was born December 15, 1937 in the Little Creek Community in Yancey County, NC to the late Frank John Mitchell and Marie Hensley Mitchell. After graduating from Beelog High School class of 1957, he then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. Bill worked as a Veneer Specialist for Columbia Forest Products for many years until his retirement. He was the former pastor of Curdsville Church of God in Buckingham County, VA. After returning to Marion, NC he then became a member of First Christian Church of Marion, NC. Bill loved working in his flowers and had a green thumb for it, becoming a master gardener. He was one of a kind. Bill was an expert storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor. He was always a jokester and a very special man. He will forever be missed by those who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, Bill is also preceded in death by six siblings, Nan Fender, Joyce Edwards, Ted Mitchell, Ella Von Mitchell, Walter Mitchell and Joan Mitchell.
Those left behind to cherish Bill’s memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Watts Mitchell; three children, Rafael Mitchell (Kim), Monica Mitchell and April Shoup (Art) all of Marion, NC; four grandchildren, Marcus Mitchell, Travis Peek, Ethan Mitchell (Hannah) and Hannah Woody (Dylan); one precious great-grandson, Mason Peek; five siblings, Jimmy Frank Mitchell (Doris) of Hico, WV, Norma Lewis (Henry) of Marion, NC, Mitt McCreary (Terry) of China Grove, NC, Pastor Don Mitchell (Sue) of Marion, NC and John Mitchell (Sheila) of Williamston, SC; and a special sister, Floy Collins.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm on Monday, November 22, 2021 in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion, NC. A funeral service to celebrate Bill’s life will follow at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with his brother, Pastor Don Mitchell, officiating. Interment will follow the service at Bradley Cemetery.
