Willa Mae Whitson, 82, of the Bowditch Community, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 1, 2019, at Care Partners Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Asheville, surrounded by her family. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Theodore and Ruth Robinson Freeman, and the wife of Claude Whitson, who died in 2008. She was also preceded in death by sisters: Betty Jean Freeman and Jerlean Silvers. Willa Mae was a former employee of Pollard's Drug Store and Taylor Togs. She loved God, her family, and will be remembered as a shining light to all who knew her.
Surviving are a sister: Genavee Layell of Burnsville; a brother: Doyle Freeman and wife, Teresa, of Mills River; nieces: Sherry Fender and husband, Bill, of Burnsville, and Debbie Taylor and husband, Tim, of Swannanoa; a nephew: Jerry Layell and wife, Mitzi, of Burnsville; several other nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Monday, June 3, 2019, in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Revs. Casey Fender and Josh McDevitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Woody Cemetery on Ridge Road, Green Mountain. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Sherry and Bill Fender.
